The masterclass, entitled “Life in Limassol before 1980 by Victor Ioannides,” will offer an in-depth exploration of the life and work of Victor Ioannides, with a particular emphasis on his depiction of life in Limassol before 1980. The masterclass will be delivered by Antonia Loizou, a highly experienced art historian and curator.

As one of the first Cypriot artists to graduate from the Athens School of Fine Arts, Victor Ioannides brought a wealth of knowledge and technique back to his homeland. His dedication to art education was evident through his tenure as an art teacher in various schools across Limassol and Larnaca from 1931 to 1966, where he mentored and inspired a new generation of Cypriot artists.

Ioannides was renowned for his innovative approach to painting, particularly his development of unique colour mixtures prepared over fire. This meticulous process resulted in artworks with exceptional transparency and brightness, giving them a porcelain-like finish.

His subjects often depicted Cypriot landscapes, seascapes, and everyday life, capturing the essence of the island's culture and natural beauty. His impressionistic style and technical prowess not only set him apart from his contemporaries but also contributed significantly to the evolution of modern Cypriot art.

Beyond his personal artistic achievements, Ioannides was instrumental in fostering the artistic community in Cyprus. In 1936, he co-founded "The Atelier," the island's first design and advertising workshop, with his colleague George Fasouliotis. This initiative provided a platform for artists to collaborate and engage with the public, marking a significant milestone in Cyprus's cultural development.

Through his multifaceted contributions—as an artist, educator, and community leader—Victor Ioannides left an indelible mark on the cultural heritage of Cyprus, enriching its artistic legacy for future generations.

As an expert in Cypriot history and art, Loizou will delve into the socio-cultural influences that shaped Ioannides’ work, shedding light on the connection between his art and the landscape, history, and people of Cyprus.

This masterclass is a unique opportunity for participants to gain insight into both the history of Cyprus and the profound impact of Ioannides on his artistic landscape.
