Zacharias KOUMOUDIOS

Zacharias Koumoudios was a self-taught ceramic artist who worked from his home workshop. His work focussed on scenes from rural Cyprus, as well as Greek and Cypriot mythology, the Trojan War, and other sources of inspiration.

Zacharias created over 800 works of ceramic sculpture in his lifetime, working from a simple potter’s wheel and table in his outdoor garage in Limassol. Born in Prastio, Messaoria in 1940, he was a professional teacher.

His work and life reflects the transition of Cyprus from a British colony to an independent Member State of the European Union, and one in which individual artists and artisans left a permanent imprint on communal culture and the richness of ordinary life.

ART.Cy will be launching our first Living Artist project: an attempt to photograph and catalogue his entire work.
